10 Apr Staying active and healthy during pregnancy (The South Coast Edition)
As a local Obstetrician working in Wollongong, I am fortunate to witness the unique experiences of pregnant women in this beautiful part of the country. The South Coast is known for its stunning beaches, national parks, and a variety of outdoor activities that make it an ideal place for expectant mothers to stay active and healthy during pregnancy.
One of the best things about living on the South Coast is the abundance of exercise classes tailored to pregnant women. From prenatal yoga and pilates to aqua aerobics and group fitness classes, there are many options available to expectant mothers looking to stay active and healthy during their pregnancy. These classes provide a great opportunity for mums to be to meet other pregnant women, build a support network, and maintain their fitness levels and mental health throughout their pregnancy.
Aqua aerobics
Aqua aerobics is a popular option for pregnant women in the Illawarra region, providing a low-impact workout that is easy on the joints which helps to alleviate common pregnancy-related discomforts such as back and hip pain, pelvic pressure and swelling.
Prenatal yoga & Prenatal pilates
Prenatal yoga and Pilates classes are popular in the Illawarra region, with many studios offering classes that cater specifically to pregnant women. These classes focus on strengthening the core and pelvic floor muscles, improving flexibility and balance, and promoting relaxation and stress relief. Exercise is extremely important for your mental health during pregnancy.
Mothers group and mental health
Joining a mothers’ group, attending antenatal classes, social classes once baby arrives and seeking support from friends and family are all important steps in maintaining good physical and mental health during and after pregnancy. Catching up with friends who are going through similar experiences can be a great way to debrief and feel like you are not alone in your experiences. Some of the best friendships are created through mothers’ groups.
Walking and swimming during pregnancy
For expectant mothers looking to stay active outdoors, the South Coast offers a range of activities such as bushwalking, surfing, and swimming. Bushwalking in the region’s national parks is a great way to stay active and enjoy the stunning natural beauty of the area, please ensure that you know the tracks well and that they are safe, taking a friend along is a great idea. Swimming is an excellent exercise option for pregnant women, with many local pools offering aqua aerobics classes and lap swimming.
Overall, living on the South Coast of Australia offers many unique opportunities for pregnant women to stay active, healthy, and happy during their pregnancy. It is important to check with your health care provider before starting a new exercise program, and I recommend seeing a physiotherapist who can tailor your exercise program/classes to your particular needs.
